Journal:

A relaxed day in Dunsmuir getting ready to return to the trail tomorrow.  I went through my pack with a fine tooth comb, cleaning out a lot of accumulated dirt and vegetation, and also decided I could do without a few things I was carrying for tbe last section or longer – rope, gaiters, snow baskets (for trekking poles) – and mailed them to my next “bounce box” stop in Ashland, Oregon (about two weeks away).  Also picked up my ice axe and crampons from the Post Office for use on the next section.

Other than that, just hung out in my motel room doing bits and pieces or wandered around the very quiet town.  Very relaxing.

I have added an extra day to my food supplies for the next section to Etna, in case the snow slows me up, but would like to make it in four days, meaning I arrive there on the 4th of July.  Not sure what will be open if I do.   Can’t find any indication of anything happening there by way of celebration, and suspect the big festivities are in larger towns like Mt Shasta.
